AOL Broadband UK was purchased by Carphone Warehouse in 2007 making it the 3rd largest ISP in the UK. As part of the purchase agreement Carphone needed to establish a new ISP infrastructure to support over 2 million subscribers. I am employed as part of a specialist transition team to help achieve this goal.

* Architect and Lead Engineer for the implementation of a mission-critical, distributed, High Availability, Network Monitoring System based on ZenOSS and Cacti for data collection, alerting, auditing and monitoring of the Core ISP Network and Server infrastructure, comprising over 1500 high-end routing and ISP Services devices.
* Architect and Implementation Engineer for Cisco TACACs network directory and authentication infrastructure. Providing resilient service to over 1500 Cisco, Juniper routers and Linux Servers
Implementation of a centralised Server Configuration Management System based on Puppet. Redhat Enterprise Linux Scripted Server builds and application installation and configuration. Secure configuration management and reporting.
* Implemented a high-availability system for Scripted data collection and processing of Radius accounting data for over 2 million customers
* Implemented a high-availability auditing and alerting system for Syslog data. Utilizing Splunk and Syslog-ng. This enabled the organisation to search and report on over 85GB of log data in realtime.
* Designed and implemented a highly-available distributed Network infrastructure architecture to support the OSS server and SAN infrastructure. Configured secure, multi-site, fail-over architecture for all OSS services. Implemented a single-subnet stretched cluster architecture with no single points of failure.
* Configured a highly available, secure Apache reverse-SSL proxy configuration using modsecurity as an application layer firewall.
* Configured a highly efficient disk-to-disk backup architecture using BackupPC, providing single-instancing across devices, fully automated backup cycle and ageing. Providing an overall reduction of 87% in disk-space utilization.
* Designed and Implemented a multi-firewall, multi-site fail-over cluster using Netscreen SSG Secure Appliance Firewalls.

Senior Systems Infrastructure Engineer / Architect

City Hall, London

The Greater London Authority was setup in 2000 to provide regional government over the Greater London Area. The GLA shares power with 32 local councils and the City of London Council. I was employed as part of the 3rd line Engineering Team responsible for development and maintenance of over 70 different services and approximately 450 server and Network devices.

* Architect and Consultant for the Storage Area Network (SAN) migration from HP HSG80 to EMC Clariion Storage Arrays and Fibre Channel Switches. Researched, Designed, planned and implemented the migration of data from the old SAN Array to the new. Planned the migration of business critical services and applications from the old SAN to the new. The configuration was designed to maximise throughput for a heavily-loaded Clustered Exchange Environment using multiple RAID groups with Striped data virtualization.
* Lead Authority for the Architecture and Change Maintenance of the entire Storage Area Network, Internal Switched Foundry Network, Sun Solaris Servers, HP Server Blade Infrastructure, EMC Brocade Fibre Channel Switches, EMC Clariion Storage Array, Qlogic and Emulex FC cards, Powerpath Multipath Management Software, Foundry SuperX Switches and HP Blade System Chassis. Lead Engineer for the Design and Managemeint of SAN based Backups, utilising Netbackup, EMC RM/SE Clariion Clones and Snapshots
* Architect for the Security configuration of Active Directory on Windows 2003, utilising Group Policy and Startup, Logon/Logoff and Shutdown scripts based on VBScript and NT Shell scripting. Diagnosis and correction of Replication issues with both AD and FRS. Carried out LDAP Schema updates in order to store custom attributes in Active Directory. Integration and administration of SMS 2003. Configuration, Administration and Sizing of the entire Exchange 2003 infrastructure. Integration of desktop faxing, Blackberry Enterprise Server, Windows Mobile devices and E-mail archiving.
Performance Monitoring, Analysis and Sizing of Solaris, Linux, Windows, SQL Server and Exchange Server. Root cause analysis of SAN performance bottlenecks and data restructuring to improve performance. Development of VB, Perl and Ruby scripts for the analysis of data and the production of statistics on File Space Usage, User Login and Auditing activity for Security and Inventory purposes.
* Lead Technical Infrastructure Engineer and Administrator for the Oracle Portal, Oracle Identity Management, Oracle Collaboration Suite and Oracle RAC Cluster implementation Project. Evaluation and performance testing of ADAMM and Oracle Identity Manager. Creation and Roll-out of Secure and Highly Available Redhat Linux Server builds using HP/Altiris Blade Management software and Bash Shell Scripts. Configured redundant Foundry ServerIron load balancers for both the internal network and DMZ environments. Design, Installation and configuration of two Apache based web reverse proxies running on a hardened Redhat build and preforming web application Intrusion Detection and monitoring for the protection of Oracle Applications.
* Deployment and Administration of Java Web Applications on Oracle Portal, Sun One Application Server/iPlanet Web Server and Apache Tomcat. JRE performance tuning and debugging. Configuration of Virtual Hosting, SSL and integrated authentication for Web Applications. Load balancing, performance testing and analysis. Configuration of Log file management and integration with our real-time alerting system. Intrusion detection using ModSecurity 2 and Bandwidth throttling for denial of service protection. Use of Subversion to manage changes to websites and configuration files.
* Project Manager and Technical Architect for the Migration of Active Directory, Windows File Server Cluster and Microsoft Exchange Server Clusters from Windows 2000 to 2003 and Exchange 2000 to 2003. The migration of these critical systems was managed and implemented with minimum disruption and to budget and time deadlines. During this migration we also implemented a high-availability HP Blade System that involved significant restructuring of the server room and upgrades to the cooling and power systems.
* Secondary Lead Engineer and Consultant for the Security Project for the upgrading of Internal Security, Auditing capability, Perimeter E-mail and Web security in order to meet ISO 17799 requirements. Evaluation of systems from more than 30 different suppliers. Lead Engineer for the implementation into the live Environment.
* Secondary Lead Engineer and Consultant for the development of the GLA IT Business Continuity Policy. Planning, prioritization, testing and performing disaster recovery restores of File, Mail, Web, Linux and Solaris services at both Synstar and NDR disaster recovery sites.
* Design and Implementation of a cross platform Alert and Monitoring System for real time analysis of Event Logs from Servers, the SAN and Network Devices. The system is Implemented using Open Source software and also provides historical trend data for analysis and auditing. This was the first system of its type implemented at the GLA and has become an indispensable asset in helping the engineers to maintain service levels.
* Design, installation and configuration of a VMWare ESX Server farm and Disaster Recovery restores of systems from the Live Environment into Test. Utilization of Veritas Netbackup, Backup Exec, Ghost and VMWare P2V.
* Lead Administrator of SQL Server 2000 Clustered and standalone Servers. Data Loading, migrations, security. Good knowledge of T-SQL. Disaster recovery, performance monitoring and tuning.
