CV
| As a department head and senior engineer, I've managed projects ranging from email newsletters to ground-breaking search engine technology. I've successfully collaborated to build major websites for clients including Sony, Wyeth Pharmaceutical and Jet2. I have a background with experience in creative, web design, web development, software engineering and a heavy emphasis on online marketing throughout which provides me with an excellent perspective and understanding. On any project I'm involved in, the quality and attention to detail is paramount and I like to impress this upon my team throughout the cycle. Creativity has driven much of my development work and new solutions enable me to find a challenge even in old problems. My programming ability is completely self taught, I've never read a programming book, so people have learnt to come to me when they have a project everyone else has told them isn't possible with existing technology as I'm far more likely to create a new one. I've never read it can't be done. |
Employment History
(Oct 2006 & ongoing)
Online Campaign Manager
This was an online advertising agency that was looking for something to separate them from every other SEO agency out there. I was head hunted for the position as an Online Campaign Manager. In due time I was given a department of my own with a remit covering SEO, web development and search engine technology.
Initially my work was largely involved with programming our in house search engine, which we then used to optimize websites, generate relevant content and related article links, develop new strategies and ideas for producing quality websites that would naturally climb the rankings without black hat intervention.
The search engine core is based on my own work on Optren (mentioned above within Personal Projects) and is entirely my own code. I redeveloped the entire code base in 2 months from PHP to C# in what was a new area for me. I've taken my original project and moved it to the desktop allowing a true personal search engine that will index depending on the keyword filters applied, as well as adapting it for the needs of an SEO agency. You can find the latest development news at http://www.surrch.com.
Most of my Campaign Management work involves use of Google's reporting tools – Analytics and AdWords are of course a staple and I have managed accounts spending tens of thousands pounds sterling monthly.
My department focuses on any technology involving search. We understand how search engines work through creating our own and are responsible for creating bespoke software to improve a sites ranking as transforming our in-house products into viable commercial offerings.
(May 2006 to Sep 2006)
Lead Front-End Developer
LeedsI spent a short spell working at technology agency Branded3 in Leeds as Lead Front-End Developer. I was responsible for front end design and development as well as seamless integration with our in-house framework.
Branded3 are a technology agency producing work largely using ASP.NET 2 and C#. Whilst with Branded3 I worked on projects for Sony, ASDA, JPMorgan and Halifax amongst others.
(Feb 2006 to May 2006)
PHP and AJAX developer
YorkI joined Vebra, York, as a PHP and AJAX developer. Vebra is a market leader in the development of software for use in the housing and property industries and much of my time was spent prototyping advanced user interfaces and working with the in-house PHP framework for a next-gen project. Whilst at Vebra I also worked on the property portal ThinkProperty.com to help bolster the search engine rankings, on and immediately after launch.
(Jul 2005 to Dec 2005)
Freelance
I spent my spare time building a PHP search engine with a MySQL database capable of indexing millions of web pages, files and content. I also was asked back to work as a Consultant at Creative Lynx on two major projects – one using HTML and heavy Javascript for tablet PCs(award winning work, see http://www.pmsociety.org.uk/reports/26-1-07/geoffbrook.shtml) and the second involving the movement of 30 domains and sites with databases to a new independent server.
(Mar 2005 to Jul 2005)
Web Developer
Creative Lynx LimitedI was employed as Web Developer for Creative Lynx Limited. Creative Lynx are one of the North of England's leading design agencies. I worked in a small team to produce websites, multimedia and designs to what we called ‘pixel perfect' levels. I returned after leaving to do consultancy on a freelance basis for Creative Lynx until I moved away from Manchester.
I started at Creative Lynx as a multimedia developer and went on to be placed in charge of IT and Network security. I was asked to manage originally print based designers in order to create website design to different standards than their normal sphere of work. We researched and ran mass email campaigns for several of our clients to track the results of the campaigns and show the effectiveness of the approach to our client; resulting in at least 50% click through on all of our campaigns.
I was also put in charge of a project to research and set up a dedicated web server to transfer over 30 client websites with as little inconvenience as possible. Clients I worked with included Manchester City Council, Wyeth Pharmaceutical and the Land Restoration Trust.
(Mar 2004 to Oct 2004)
medication4uMy employment began with medication4u on a long term contract; the parent company to 0800easymed. I developed a PHP/MySQL system that went into use across the company with sale price for the full package reaching £6000. I spent 8 months in Cyprus in completion of the system and online marketing. The system included a payment gateway, order tracking and visitor tracking. It used OOP principles for its context based administration system.

Additional Information
| http://flights.jet2.com We were given a two week deadline to move the flights section of the site, comprising thousands of pages, into the new design and layout we'd earlier applied to other sections of the Jet2 website. Flights was completed ahead of schedule with a bespoke .net framework I planned and developed. The framework was lightweight, and most importantly allowed as many people to work on moving the content simultaneously as possible. Algorithms were used to generate standard content for sections that appeared across many of the different destinations reducing the physical number of pages we needed to work on down to just shy of 600. The entire site was SEO ready, with url rewriting built in and has since seen a dramatic improvement in search engine rankings. http://www.jet2.com/ski We were tasked with redeveloping the Jet2 skiing and snowboarding website to establish a more consistent design and layout across all Jet2 websites as the first in a series of new interlocking websites. • I liaised with Jet2 to identify the technical resources currently available for production of the ski-snowboarding website. • I critiqued the designer to make sure the design would be readily turned into HTML to fit our narrow deadline. • I supervised our HTML developer in how to construct the initial templates for approval from Jet2 so they would not exceed the capabilities of the server and would enable us to rapidly turn out the 300 static pages required in a format that was search engine friendly. • I developed bespoke software to enable rapid templating of pages with unique search engine friendly software to enable us to hit our deadline. • We successfully delivered the project on time, and on the back of this were given the tasks to re-build the rest of the Jet2.com website in the same fashion. • In order to improve upon the development of future websites, I met with the client to discuss improvements to their server infrastructure to allow faster build and discussed how to more closely match the working methods of our developers and their in house team bringing a closer working relationship and a faster turnaround. Homejames SEO reporting system All reports for Search Engine Optimisation were produced manually, by analysing the results output by a piece of 3rd party software into Microsoft Excel. Numbers had to be checked, put through equations and finally turned into graphs. This was a process that could take up to week for one monthly report for one client taking up a large amount of hours at the end of every month. • I suggested investigating alternatives to the SEO report process and highlighted the amount of time each report could take away from other necessary work. • Initially I researched existing third party software, to try and locate an existing alternative to our problem, and then to locate key features that we could potentially use in our own approach. • I went through the shortcomings of the current reports with the Managing Director, the graphs we were creating actually presented a poor picture of how our campaigns were progressing and didn't achieve a clear picture of how the company was achieving or missing its goals. I suggested alternative ways of analysing our figures to better show us how to improve our online marketing and show the client how we'd managed to successfully progress their campaigns. • A designer was resourced to work with on developing a look and feel for the system, which would entirely replace our reporting both offline and online. • I developed a system to automatically analyse all the data available from the 3rd party ranking tool, and import it into a database. Code from existing in-house software was used to reduce the time needed for what would have been a lengthy project. • I created a front end system which automatically retrieves the data from the database and outputs it as graphs for specific keywords, search engines and dates allowing us to highlight areas of a report and gain a statistical advantage over our competitors in relating how our campaigns were actually working. • The system was completed a week before the end of the next calendar month, and has been used for all reports ever since due to its ease of use and removal of manual labour freeing up time for other essential projects. • The SEO reports system has now saved the company tens of thousands of pounds in man hours, and continues to do so on a monthly basis. I can also use an astute creative point of view from my time working within the creative industry. My skills in search engine optimization come from a mixture of experience in marketing sites on the web through pay per click and from an understanding of how search engines work (and ultimately natural search ranking) which is far beyond most developer’s knowledge – having spent much of my time researching the early development of Yahoo and Google in particular. My research has ranged from reading the paper's presented by Google's founders whilst still attending Stanford University to developing my own search technology. I now often write my own research material, particularly on the use of semantic search in the future. I have been using Apple Macs for 6 years and am fully versed with OSX. I have been using Linux for 6 years, typically using mandrake on the desktop and SSH to remote servers to administrate by command line. I have set up web servers in many different configurations running LAMP technologies, Zend, PEAR, FTP and many other tools. On my personal system I currently run Windows Vista and Ubuntu. |
